Booking flights:
This is a great time (coronavirus) to find cheap flights.
Google Flights and similar sites will track flights you're interested in and let you know when the price changes.
I suggest you get ready to jump in quickly once the virus panic eases but before the prices go up again!
Click here for the Air India booking page
Click here for the Jetstar booking page
Dates: I suggest we try and travel to India together where possible (I know this doesn't suit everybody). The Saturday flight arrives in Delhi at 6.35pm Saturday, so you'll have 48 hours to have a look around and get to Manali.
If you let me know your flight bookings I'll post them here so those who haven't booked have the option of choosing the same flights.
Alternative flights:
Click here for other flights ex Sydney that day
Click here for flights ex Brisbane that day More expensive, no direct flights. The Singapore Airlines option costs roughly the same as the option above (when you take Sydney costs into account) but it's an all night flight with a 2 hour stopover in Singapore at 2am Australian time.
Please let me know if you come across other options worth considering.
Travel Advisory:
- Most airlines require a current passport to make your international booking - Air India does not.
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months at time of boarding in Australia or you will not be allowed on the flight.
- If you don't already have it, get some good travel insurance that covers you for flight cancellation (flights may be changed or cancelled if this coronavirus thing is still going on) and also for riding a motorcycle over 250cc.
I have found AIG to be quite good in the past but you have to be a youngster (under 70).
I'm currently using Columbus Direct but check the fine print carefully as it changes often and no insurance company likes to give money away! If you happen to fall off a mountain you want a first class ride home, not a painful stint in some third rate Indian hospital.
Tim got a good deal from Real Insurance (ask him for the details)
-
Get an International Driver's licence unless you are sure that your travel insurance covers you with just an Australian licence. Otherwise you will not be able to claim in the event of a motorcycle accident. $42+postage.
Get one over the counter at the local NRMA office and save the postage.

Indian visa
|
A visa (and a passport valid for at least 6 months) is required to visit india
Lots of good info about getting a visa here, including;
- Cost $US76 (about $A120)
- Turnaround time 5 days (option to pay more for faster service)
- You don't need to send in your passport but you will need a scan of the front page of your passport and of a recent passport photo.
Apply for eVisa above (not clear whether it's an authorised site, though) or here:
Official Indian Government web site
Allow plenty of time, they want to know quite a lot about you!
You need to provide a contact in India, we'll get the tour company to provide one.
